That sounds obvious. The mistake we see most is sizing by length and forgetting width. Below we go vehicle by vehicle, using the foam wall berms we stock.

Start with three measurements

Overall length of the vehicle, bumper to bumper (or hitch to tailgate if a trailer stays hooked up).

Width at the tires, not the mirrors. The tires are what roll over the foam walls.

The biggest container that could leak while the vehicle is parked: a fuel tank, a hydraulic reservoir, a transfer tank in the bed.

Add at least 1 foot of clearance on each side and 2 feet at each end. Skip this and the driver clips a wall every time they park, and those walls wear out faster.

Quick sizing table

Footprints below are approximate ranges. If you’re buying for a pickup, it’s the one we recommend first. A 7-foot-wide pickup leaves about 1.5 feet of clearance on each side. It holds 498 gallons and weighs 83 pounds. It ships UPS Ground, so there’s no forklift or freight appointment needed when it arrives.

One catch: crew-cab long-bed pickups. Many run 20 feet or longer, which puts the bumpers right on the end walls. Measure first, and if it’s close, go with the 10′ x 30′.

When 10 feet wide is not enough

Every PVC foam wall berm we stock is 10 feet wide. That works well for pickups, vans and service trucks. An 8-foot-wide box truck leaves only about a foot on each side, so park carefully or step up in length for more room to maneuver. For semis and tankers, call us at (800) 869-9633 and we will recommend the right containment for your rig.

Is a 4-inch wall enough?

For what these berms are built for, yes. Think of a pickup’s fuel line weeping overnight, or a hydraulic hose letting go while a mechanic works on a service truck. Even the smallest size we list holds more than most vehicle fuel tanks, and the 10′ x 20′ holds 498 gallons. If you need to hold a full tank compartment from a tanker, look at a berm with taller walls on our spill containment berms page. If your site has an SPCC plan or permit, size the berm to what that plan requires.

Set-up tips that make a berm last

Lay it on a clean surface. Sweep away gravel and sharp debris first.

Drive in straight and slowly. The foam walls compress under the tires and stand back up after the vehicle passes.

Keep sorbent pads inside the berm to catch drips before they spread across the floor.

After rain, pump or soak up standing water so the berm keeps its full capacity.

Frequently asked questions

What size berm do I need for a pickup truck? Most regular-cab and short-bed pickups fit a 10′ x 20′ berm. Crew-cab long-bed pickups often run 20 feet or longer and fit better in a 10′ x 30′.

Can I drive in and out of a foam wall berm from any side? Yes. The foam walls compress under the tires on any side and recover after the vehicle passes.

How much does a 10′ x 20′ foam wall berm hold? 498 gallons, with 4-inch walls.

What about semis and tankers? Our foam wall berms are sized for pickups, vans, service trucks and box trucks. For semis and tankers, call (800) 869-9633 and we will recommend the right containment.

Does shipping cost extra? Foam wall berms ship free to the continental US. Sizes up to 10′ x 20′ go UPS Ground; 10′ x 30′ and larger go by LTL freight.

Shop by size

See every size in our foam wall containment berm collection, or read our PVC foam wall berm guide for materials and capacities.
